Redevelopment of Piazza della Costituzione

The subject area of the proposal project concerns the current Piazza della costituzione in Florence and it fits into the redevelopment and functional rethinking of the entire area, also for reasons related to the future tramway line, which will have to this square one of his stops.
The square is bordered by important urban signs, such as the Mugnone stream and the Fortezza da Basso exhibition center, while the surrounding area presents an architecture that can be defined as historic, with eight-twentieth-century imprint.
Piazza della Costituzione is a vast square of trapezoidal shape which is located in Florence in the district of Statuto, in correspondence with the Via dello Statuto bridge, which crosses the stream Mugnone which runs parallel to the square. Piazza della Costituzione divides the area with Viale Filippo Strozzi and the Fortezza da Basso and also the district 5 of Rifredi with the district 1 of the historic center.

The volumetric space is formed by two axes. The first axis is parallel to the eastern road which is also the tramway route, the second axis is considered parallel to the Mugnone stream.
The dense and compact urban framework of the project area creates a narrow view compared to occasions like the stream and the Fortezza da Basso and this led to the idea of creating an open area. So to make an extended landscape, the sloping surfaces with controlled heights are introduced. The current situation of the Mugnone stream as a sinking of the urban fabric creates a possibility to form different levels that descends from the square to the stream, in order to establish a direct connection between them.
